Look for the deep verandah

The house is on Oak Street, a short walk from the railway station and the Tree of Knowledge. Look for the wide verandah, the lamp over the door and the chalkboard by the step.

“Driving in from out west? Aim for the lit verandah on Oak Street. Olivia has the door open before you've found the handbrake, and there's tea on before your boots are off.”

Getting here

By road, by rail or on foot

If you're driving, you'll arrive on one of the two highways that meet at Barcaldine. Follow the signs to the town centre and turn into Oak Street; the house is on the corner block with the deep verandah. Kerbside parking is plentiful, and there is a small car park behind the building.

Travelling by train, you step off at the station and walk along Oak Street for a few minutes. Olivia will gladly hold a table for guests whose train is running late, as long as you phone from the platform. Taxis are scarce in town, so arrange a lift home before the evening ends.

The phone is answered from three in the afternoon until the house closes. Outside those hours it goes to a message, and Olivia returns calls the next day. Email is checked each morning, and bookings are confirmed in the order they arrive.

The dining room is step-free from the street, and a small lift reaches the upstairs room. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout. If you need anything arranged in advance, mention it when you book and we'll do our best to have it ready before you walk in.

The side lane leads to the car park behind the building, and the gate is left open until half past ten. Larger vehicles, caravans and trailers are best parked on the wider stretch of Oak Street nearer the station, where the kerb is longer and the street is quieter. Todd will happily point you to the right spot if you ring from the road.

We don't offer rooms ourselves, but the town has several places to stay within a short walk or drive, and Olivia keeps a short list at the front desk. If you plan to spend the whole evening upstairs, it's wise to book somewhere to sleep first, since the town fills quickly in the cooler months.

Anything left behind is kept in the cupboard behind the front desk for about a month and then given to a local charity. If you think you've left a jacket, hat or phone charger in the house, ring and ask for Olivia, describe it and she'll check the cupboard.

Email goes to the bookings inbox, which Olivia reads every morning. Please put the evening you're asking about in the subject line, and mention the name on the booking if you're replying to a confirmation.
