Ask away: questions and answers

The practical questions we hear most, from parking and access to which poker games we deal, answered without waffle.

Straight answers

Everything people ask us

We have collected the questions we're asked at the door, on the phone and in the odd letter. Some are about the practical side of getting to Barcaldine and into the house. Others are about the games and how they work. If your question isn't here, ring and ask, because we'd rather answer than have you wonder.

The answers below are the usual ones. They change very little, though a seasonal detail sometimes needs adjusting, and the opening hours in the footer are always the final word.

One more thing before you start: most of these answers apply equally to the dining room and to the casino room, and none of them involves money at the tables, because there isn't any. If you want to know how a particular game is played, the room page is the best place to start.

Getting here and getting in

Practical matters

Is there parking nearby?

Yes. Kerbside parking runs the length of Oak Street, and there's a small car park behind the building with a gate you can reach from the side lane. On busy nights, locals tend to walk in from a few blocks away.

Can I reach the casino room without stairs?

There's a small lift at the back of the building that serves the upstairs room, and the dining room has no steps from the street door. Let Olivia know when you book and she'll have everything ready.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Mostly, yes. Vegetarian, gluten-free and nut-free meals can all be arranged, and the kitchen can adjust many dishes. Please mention your needs when you book so Trevor can plan, and remind your server when you sit down.

How late does the kitchen stay open?

The kitchen closes at half past eight, so the last orders for mains go in just before. Sweets, tea and coffee are available until the house closes at eleven, and the tables upstairs keep going until then.

Are you open on public holidays?

We usually open on public holidays, except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Hours can change around long weekends, so phone ahead if you're planning a special supper.

Can I leave a bag or swag at the door?

Yes. There's a rack by the front door for coats, hats and small bags, and Olivia can mind larger items behind the desk. We cannot store luggage overnight.

Can we hold a birthday supper?

Of course. Tell us the numbers, and Trevor will happily bake a pavlova with a candle on top. Everyone in the party must be 18 or over, which keeps birthdays pleasantly grown-up.

The games and the house

Cards, chips and manners

Which poker games do you deal?

Texas Hold'em and Omaha on most nights, with Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw when the table asks. Roulette and blackjack are dealt every night the room is open. We deal no other games.

Can I take a chip home as a souvenir?

No, they stay in the room. Chips belong to the house and have no value outside it, so they're counted back into the tray when the evening ends.

How long does a blackjack hand take?

Usually less than a minute, which is part of the charm. A full round at a table of five takes a few minutes, and the dealer will slow down for anyone who is still finding their feet.

Is there a time limit on a seat at the tables?

No fixed limit, but if people are waiting, Todd may ask whether you'd like to rotate. Most guests happily swap after an hour or so, and you can always return to your seat later.

Do I have to eat before I go upstairs?

Not at all. Supper is lovely, but you're welcome to come straight to the stairs. A pot of tea and a lamington are always available at the edge of the room.

What happens if someone gets rowdy?

It's very rare, and Todd handles it with a quiet word. Anyone who spoils the evening for others is asked to leave. We prefer firm kindness to a scene.

Is there anything to play online?

No. We have no website games, no app and no online tables. Everything happens in person at 47 Oak Street, and the website simply tells you about the house and takes your booking.
